Do what you love or love what you do?

“I hated every minute of the training, but I said don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”

Muhammad Ali

Thinking about work as suffering now to enjoy later (during vacation or at retirement) is a world view shared by many. For the vast majority of us, it might just not be practical to make a living by only doing things we love: World travel, playing video game or listening to music are not the most reliable sources of income.

Ali Abdaal, a doctor living in London, was intrigued about productivity and joy.

His secret to more productivity was not having the perfect system or being disciplined more than anyone else. The central insight he got related to being more productive was to learn to enjoy the journey.

“When we are doing things we enjoy, we are not worried about productivity. Productivity comes by itself.”

By using a few mindset shifts, you might be able to enjoy the things you are already doing, and get ever better at doing them.

According to Ali, the key is to mold the environment to suit your individual needs, bringing elements that spark joy in daily routines.

Even though it might be unrealistic to change our working environment to suit all our needs, driving small change is something that everyone can do. The journey of improving and adapting can bring great joy, helping to transform the time at work into a pleasant and productive experience.
